See this thread for some further discussion - liminalengarde.proboards.com/thread/237/proposal-remove-social-points-penalty
As I said before, I wanted to try out the rules in play before making a decision but we've now given it enough time.
The four options.
Leave as is - The "if it ain't broke don't fix it" option. I know some of you have expressed to me privately you'd like a break from changes to the core structural rules, so this may appeal for that reason.
Adam's Proposal - I'll let Adam argue for this in his own words:
The logic for my proposal is that the rule is an overbearing penalty to playing the game for low SL characters.
Last month, as an example, I was able to raise my SL but because I was able to exceed the SP requirements I start this month with a Negative 2 modifier; for just playing the game.
For low SL this kind of penalty for playing is fundamentally unfair. We have less opportunity to generate SL as it is, to then say because we played the game last month you have to do MORE this, which inevitably will lead to another penalty for playing at the end of the current month, is unfair and negative to a good gaming experience.
Instead I propose a new system for those who exceed their required SL gain by 150%; a social "Mention in dispatches" of a D3 SP bonus for 6 months (or other agreed timescale) to represent the impact that character had on the Paris social scene that month. At SL10 the roll increases to a D6. These bonus's can be gained every month that the condition is reached.
Raise Cap to 2x SP - The argument for this would be that there are now more ways to gain SP and most people end up positive each month, so it makes sense to make people more aggressively pursue SPs. Especially through toadying and other forms of player interaction.
Return to the Core Rules
This is obviously the simplest option and arguably easier to raise your SL because you only need 3x your SL, not 4. It does mean that excess SP are entirely wasted. If this one is most popular I will be waiting three months to implement it so people with stashed SP aren't unfairly penalised.

Return to the Core Rules
To raise a character’s Social Level by one level, Status Points equal to three times the number of the Social Level sought must be accumulated in a single month. For a character of Social Level 4 to attain Level 5, he must accumulate 15 Status Points in the four weeks of the month. At the end of the month, all Status Points accumulated that month are dropped and the character begins anew. Please note that while Status Points are dropped, Social Levels are not.
